DESCRIPTION

The first two volumes only of a three volume work. Consisting of volume I, presenting the charges against Caroline, and volume II, being the first part of Carolines defence. Lacking volume III, presenting the second part of Carolines defence.

Unhappy with her comparative public popularity to him, King George IV determined to divorce his wife, Caroline. At the time, a charge of adultery was one of the few courses of action available to him, and so the government introduced the Pains and Penalties Bill of 1820 into parliament, aiming to strip Caroline of the title of queen and dissolve her marriage, and charging her of committing adultery with a low-born man, Bartolomeo Pergami.

Even during the trial, the queen remained immensely popular, as witnessed by over 800 petitions and nearly a million signatures that favoured her cause. This fascinating work, published the year after the trial, offers a detailed analysis and account of the arguments of the prosecution and defence.

Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece and title page to each volume, and with four further plates to volume I, and six further plates to volume II. Collated, complete.

With contemporary inscriptions, dated 1825, to a front blank of each volume.

With one page of publishers advertisements to the rear of volume I.

CONDITION

In tree calf bindings, with gilt detailing to spines. Externally, lovely, with light rubbing to back strip heads. Inscriptions to a front blank of each volume. Worming from page 577 to rear pastedown of volume II, not affecting text. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned, with instances of spotting, and some foxing, throughout.

Overall Condition: Very Good
