Louis Carmontelle pseud. Louis Carrogis (1717 - 1806) war ein französischer Maler, Erfinder und Landschaftsgestalter. Er war in Dienste der Herzöge von Orléans, für die er Feste organisierte und die Folie de Chartres anlegte. Carmontelle lieferte die Vorlage für den Stich La malheureusse Famille Calas (zum Justizskandal Jean Calas) von Jean-Baptiste Delafosse.

Die Affäre Calas: Jean Calas war ein französischer Protestant, der Opfer eines Justizmordes wurde. Er war beschuldigt worden, seinen ältesten Sohn, der sich im Haus der Familie erhängt hatte, erwürgt zu haben, um ihn an Übertritt zum Katholizismus zu hindern. Die "Affäre Calas" wurde in ganz Europa bekannt dank Voltaire, der sich publizistisch, unter anderem mit der Schrift Traité sur la tolérance (1763) für seine postume Rehabilitierung einsetzte.
